Metal braces

Fixed braces are the most commonly used type of orthodontic brace. Orthodontists normally glue them onto the front surface of the teeth; however, some braces are fitted on the inner surface of the teeth (See lingual braces).

A functional brace or functional appliance is a type of brace that an orthodontist uses to help correct the way the teeth meet. They are most commonly used where the lower jaw (mandible) is set back too far.

A removable brace is a type of brace that can be taken out of your mouth though they should be worn all of the time and taken out only for cleaning.

Retainers

At the end of brace treatment, teeth always try to move back towards their position at the start of treatment. This is called orthodontic relapse. Orthodontists and dentists try to reduce the chances of this happening by fitting retainers when the braces are taken off.

Clear braces

“White” braces, also known as “ceramic” or “clear” braces are fixed to the outside surface of the teeth. The bracket is white, tooth-coloured or clear. The brackets are a similar size and shape to metal braces.

Lingual braces

A lingual brace is fixed to the inside surface of the teeth (on the tongue side). They are usually made especially for your mouth, from impressions taken by your orthodontist / dentist using moulds.

Self ligating braces

Self-ligating braces are just like normal braces, except for the way that they hold the wire in place. With normal braces the wire is held by small metal wires or coloured elastic bands. With self-ligating braces the wire is held in place with a special clip and there is no need for ties or elastics.
